Alone on a Red Planet
Alone on a Red Planet is meant to be the intro to making a new home in a strange place. Survival games that have endings will usually end with the player escaping from whatever place they have been living in for all this time. I wanted to try and create the atmosphere of not necessarily a prison, but a place that the player is going to be forced to call home in the future as there really is no way to leave where they are. I didn't want to make the game overwhelmingly depressing or bleak, but I wanted to still have some of that emptiness in there. If I could have I would've liked to remove the first NPC entirely and have the second disappear after giving you their message.
For this version, I wanted to put a lot of time into your interaction with the world. I tuned the screen shake and added particle effects to the resource gathering based on playtester feedback. Since this is the player's new home I wanted to make them feel like part of the world more, as well as give a good indicator when the player is actually breaking something.
